Subjectivity

In class we are reading The Case For Christ, written by Lee Strobel.  In the introduction he states " one reason the evidence originally looked so convincing to me was because it fit my preconceptions at the time." This quote stuck out to me because it brings up a good point, when we read and understand the bible we often have our own subjectivity, preunderstandings, presuppositions, and prejudices. When one readers the Bible, they bring their own understandings and and knowledge. Knowing this, we must try as hard as possible to leave our own experiences and understandings out when we read the Bible. So lets talk little bit about subjectivity. These are the things that are internal to reader that may or may not affect the way one views the Bible. Along with subjectivity when we read the Bible with presuppositions and prejudices. Presuppositions are beliefs and ideas that we assume to be true and or concepts and ideas that we take for granted. Then prejudices are our attitudes and inclinations that have already been formed in our past. Both of these things can be very dangerous if we let them inter fear when we read the Bible. Another thing to be aware of is our preunderstandings of certain topics and issues. These shape the way we understand new information. sometimes they can be very reliable, but on the other hand they can also be very unreliable and false. Preunderstadning is the knowledge that one has previously acquired in life through past expenses, education, and /or training.  So next time you read the Bible, try to read it whit a open mind and keep all your sublectivy and preunderstadings out!
